Merewood Country House Hotel was built in 1812 for the son of the 1st Earl of Lonsdale. The house was built with stone quarried in the hotel grounds and retains many original features. These include the beautifully panelled hall and reception with its glorious stained glass and magnificent fireplace and the silk-lined drawing room. The hotel stands in 20 acres of landscaped gardens, woodland and meadow. Terraced gardens fall towards the lake each revealing a new variation of the incomparable view of lake and mountain. Hidden in the woodland is a famously magnificant multi-trunked chestnut. Red and roe deer run freely through the woods and across the terraced lawns and the estate is one of the bastions of the red squirrel. The hotel is the ideal location from which to sample the many delights of the Lake District.

Rooms Description

Merewood Country House Hotel has 20 en-suite bedrooms. Many rooms at the front of the house have exceptional views across the lake to the Coniston Fells. All rooms are fully appointed with twin, double, king size or four poster beds, direct dial telephones, television, radio-alarm and tea and coffee making facilities. The Edwardian Conservatory Bar, with its eccentric mosaic floor and all round views, is perfect for a pre-dinner drink and is well-stocked with fine malts and brandies. Merewood has two dining rooms, the Green Room and the Lonsdale Suite, in which they offer imaginative Country House cuisine. Menus are changed daily and are based on fresh local produce and on herbs from our own herb garden. Also, there is an extensive wine list drawing on a well stocked cellar.

Specialities

The Victorian gardens were laid down at the end of the 19th century and have been extensively refurbished over the last decade. Behind the m stand lovely woods in which you can wander in a maze of paths. Ancient tracks lead from the top of the estate into the fells - you can walk from the house and scarcely see a soul. The woods are home to deer, badgers, foxes and red squirrels. In the woods and gardens you can explore the lake district without ever leaving the hotel.
