You are likely to get the best standard of accommodation for your money if you stay outside the most popular areas of the Lake District. Many people prefer the less visited areas of Cumbria where there is still plenty of breath taking scenery. Try East Cumbria around Penrith or Hadrian's Wall or the West Lake District such as Wasdale.
Cheap accommodation ideal for groups covers a diverse range, from group friendly hotels and guesthouses, to perhaps the best known group holiday venue, Youth Hostels. The Lake District is particularly good for group accommodation and outdoor activity centres which offer a superb choice of outdoor sports and outdoor activities. You'll also find an array of self-catering bunkhouses, large cottages or houses (some with indoor swimming pools!), and of course there are ample campsites, holiday parks and group holiday resort options around Cumbria.

Self catering holidays generally get cheaper the more people you have in your group. For example, £800 for 7 days self catering accommodation for 10 people works out at less than £12 per person per night.

Non-accredited accommodations can therefore be very cost effective but you have no guarantee of the services on offer.
Booking very early can often save you money. Hoteliers like to fill up their rooms in advance and are especially keen to get deposits and advance payments out of season. For example, making a week long summer booking in November or December is more likely to get you a cheaper holiday than making the same booking in Easter.
Booking late or last minute can also save you money. It is much better for a room or cottage to generate some money rather than no money. Check the 'Availability' section on many of the iknow-lakedistrict listings for late availability.
