B&B Lake District, B&B Guest Houses Lake District

Bed and breakfast or B&B can often be abbreviated to B & B, Bnb, B and B, or sometimes simply BB. In any case the meaning is simple enough - or is it? B&B Guest Houses and bed and breakfast accommodation are not the same thing. The subject of this information page is the former, intended to help those looking for a B&B Lake District Guest House. These are a specific variety of bed and breakfast accommodation that deal only in bed and breakfast bookings, are normally relatively small, and are often family-owned. Bed and breakfast accommodation, on the other hand, can be used to refer to any form of accommodation that offers bed and breakfast as a service. This could be a standard hotel then, although guest houses do obviously fall under this category too. Lake District B&B Guest Houses are known for having more of a personal touch than Lake District Hotels, and there are plenty to choose from.

Should you require information about the more general bed and breakfast speciality, then this is available by clicking the Bed and Breakfast tab on the right of this text. Also, you might have noticed the pictures to the left of this text. These are linked in order that when you click on them they will take you through to the relevant B&B listings, which are categorised by region. Alternatively you could use the menu at the top of the page, in which accommodation is divided into regions and then sub-regions. For a Lake District B&B Keswick is a popular choice, particularly amongst walkers as well as those visiting for the annual beer and film festivals.

Windermere is the largest naturally occurring lake in England and is massively popular with tourists. If you're looking for a B&B Windermere has plenty, and this is a perfect place to start for those who are relatively new to the Lakes. There is, incidentally, a small town called Windermere which lies only a few miles from the water's edge, although the name 'Windermere' is more commonly used to refer to the lake. Ambleside B&B's can be found at the head of Windermere, whilst those with a penchant for mint cake might want to check out a B&B Kendal has to offer!

B&B Keswick, B&B Guest Houses

B&B Penrith accommodation, or any B&B Guest House in the Lakes, will provide a more personal and individual experience, as opposed to the standardised service you might receive in a hotel. B&B's are generally much smaller than hotels and are quite often family-run establishments. The owners are normally rich with local knowledge which they are happy to share with you, and they are always on hand to make recommendations and give advice. The price of this individualised hospitality is considerably less than you could expect to pay in a hotel, where your experience will likely be much more impersonal. Should you prefer to stay in a hotel, there are plenty of Lake District Hotels with rooms available all year round.

Lake District B&B Guest Houses will obviously provide a choice of breakfast options, and there is a chance that evening meals will be available too, although these may come at an extra cost. Discounts are occasionally offered to those booking for a few days or more, and in terms of guest houses Lake District is one of the most saturated tourist locations in the UK.

B&B Windermere: B&B 10-Point Checklist

There are a number of considerations when booking or staying at B&B's in the Lake District. To simplify things, we've made a list of 10:

1. Staying on your own? Most rooms in B&B's sleep two people, and so you may be required to pay a supplement for a double room.
2. Pets may or may not be allowed - if you want to bring them, check this is okay first.
3. In some B&B's children won't be permitted either so check first if you have kids.
4. Are evening meals provided and do they cost extra?
5. If you smoke, you may wish to check if this is allowed in the B&B.
6. Will you be bringing a car, and are there adequate parking facilities?
7. Are there en-suite bathroom facilities?
8. Make sure that your host is aware of your intended arrival time, and to let them know if you are going to be late.
9. Standard procedure is for departures to take place immediately after breakfast.
10. Cancelling your booking will generally result in the loss of your deposit, had you paid one.

B&B Ambleside: B&B Restaurant with Rooms

A growing trend is the number of restaurants that now have rooms available. These are essentially 'high brow' B&B's then. They are primarily restaurants and so the food is likely to be of a high standard, whilst there is a certain convenience in having to only travel up the stairs to your accommodation, after perhaps having had a few drinks with your meal! There are a great deal of excellent restaurants in Cumbria and the Lake District, some of which will also offer accommodation. Some Windermere B&B's might belong to this category.

B&B in Lake District: Accommodation Booking

Be prepared that deposits are normally asked for when booking your Lake District B&B. You should try to book as early as possible in order to avoid disappointment, and this is especially recommended if you were wanting to book during peak season. This can normally be loosely defined as the summer months, although busy school and bank holiday periods can also fall into this category. Note also that some Lake District B and B's may only accept bookings of a minimum 2 nights during peak periods. Generally speaking though, B&B's are quite flexible and will offer a number of options to suit you - yet another reason to stay at a Lake District B&B.

B and B Lake District Guest House Pricing

Prices for Keswick B&B's and guest houses across the Lake District are, in ordinary circumstances, 'per person' and based upon two people sharing a twin or double room per night. The rates will sometimes be reduced for those booking a longer stay of at least two or three nights. The prices will also vary dependent upon the time of year. These are normally higher in the summer months and over busy school and bank holiday periods. Watch out for special discounts and offers though, with B&B's sometimes offering special weekend options to tie in with events in the region.

Guest House Windermere: B&B Diamond Ratings

Ambleside B&B's and B&B Guest Houses across the Lake District and England are now rated according to the Diamond Scheme. This is a specially devised ratings system, tailored to B&B's and guest houses. Like the star rating system, the diamond system has now been standardised across the AA, RAC and ETC ratings board. If the RAC gives a B&B a 3 diamond rating, then the property will be rated at 3 diamonds by the ETC and AA too.

Guest houses are not comparable in size to hotels, but this contributes to their charm and appeal. Unlike hotels, B&B's might not offer an evening meal, although these can sometimes be available by arrangement in Penrith B&B's and B&B's elsewhere in the Lakes.

B&B Kendal: Diamond Ratings - Minimum Requirements

Any guest house with a diamond rating has to meet a minimum standard of facilities and service. The accommodation has to be clean, comfortable and secure, with fully equipped bedrooms. Bedding and towels will be changed before the arrival of each new guest, and at least once per week if guests are staying for longer periods. Expect storage facilities for clothing, comfortable seating and adequate lighting.

Fresh toiletries will be provided, and both bathroom and toilet areas will be clean. Heating is provided at no extra cost, and the temperature can be raised or lowered at your request. Hot water will be available at reasonable hours, whilst there is normally a choice of breakfast options.

English Tourist Board Diamond Ratings – Lake District B&B

The Diamond Rating scheme for Blackpool B&B Guest houses and those across England is on a scale of one to five diamonds, with five representing the highest luxury standard of service and facilities. Diamond ratings are awarded for standards of cleanliness, service and hospitality and areas such as bedroom facilities, bathrooms with showers and toilets, and the quality of food and dining room service. All public rooms, including lounges, bars and games rooms are judged for safety, security, general cleanliness and appearance, as well as the standard of upkeep.

Each B&B is given a percentage score which is translated into a Diamond rating from 1-5:

1 Diamond reflects a Standard Quality - scoring between 20% and 34% on the above.

2 Diamonds reflects Standard Quality - scoring between 35% and 49% on the above.

3 Diamonds is a Good Quality achieved - scoring between 50% and 69% on the above.

4 Diamonds is High Quality achieved - scoring between 70% and 84% on the above.

5 Diamonds is Outstanding Quality - scoring of 85% and more and achieving the highest quality in the above.

Red Diamond awards are also available. These are designated to B&B guest houses achieving the very best standards in the 3, 4 and 5 Diamond ratings. The ratings system in Scotland is slightly different, but rest assured that for a B&B Edinburgh won't disappoint!
