Lake Windermere Windermere Lake District Tourist Information

There's a little branch railway line, built in 1869 to serve the increasing number of tourists and connecting Ulverston to Lakeside on Windermere. This is the last remaining Furness Railway branch line. These days the line only runs from Haverthwaite, stopping at Newby Bridge and ending at Lakeside alongside Lake Windermere, and most of the wide selection of diesel and steam trains connect with Windermere Lake Cruises.

Lake Windermere History. Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway

The history of rail, and the Furness Railway in the area is intimately connected to the growth of the tourist industry. A Mr Alfred Aslett took over the Furness Railway company in the early 20th century, with some new ideas in mind for transporting tour parties from such popular holiday destinations like Blackpool and Fleetwood, taking them across Morecambe Bay to Ramsden Dock station.

Trains could then take holiday makers on to either Coniston or Lakeside. The Kendal to Windermere branch line also brought in more tourists. In 1872 the Furness Railway Company took sole control of the steamers on Windermere and Coniston. Many from Wordsworth to Wainwright have bemoaned the increasing tourism to Windermere and Coniston, indeed Wordsworth actively block the extension of a railway line beyond Windermere.
