Bikers on Alston MoorAlston has a rather special history, and just happens to sit at the crossroads of no less than five historic trans-Pennine routes, all of which wind through stunning countryside and four of which reach heights of 2000 feet. Get ready for panoramic views of the North Pennines and Lakeland in the distance.
Alston and other villages nearby such as Nenthead and Garrigill remain largely untouched. Interestingly in the 18th and 19th centuries this part of the North Pennines was a world renowned centre for lead mining, so the history of communities in fairly isolated villages like Alston is based around the history of lead mining and farming. Having changed little over the last 300 years, Alston was recently chosen in 1999 as the setting for the film 'Oliver Twist'. Not quite the David Lean original.
Check out the superb Hub Exhibition in Alston for a real social history journey into Alston's past. It's an excellent little museum, with large numbers of photographs and more. Check their excellent website for details.
