Carlisle Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery
Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery is indeed a journey through thousands of years of Border history, nodding to Roman history, railways and the notorious reivers warring families who were a rather a feisty lawless bunch, so I've heard, and ruled the Western part of the Region from the 14th to the 17th Century. Nothing like a load of wars to expand your property and possessions, wot wot. The museum holds nationally renowned collections from Roman Carlisle and Hadrian's wall, so definitely worth calling in before your trek up to Hadrian's Wall itself. Included in the collections are inscribed and sculptured stones, domestic items and jewellery, and there's a re-created section of Hadrian's Wall, up some stairs, which is part of the display.
New to the museum is an underground Millennium Gallery displaying a host of contemporary artwork, with many of the works being by local artists. Also, guess what you can try on a pair of Roman Shoes, they're rather comfortable actually!! Tullie House really is a great first port of call in Carlisle as you'll find out just how much this city has been involved in battles and sieges, there's an audio-visual presentation of this journey. There are many changing exhibitions so check the website, Also, bob into Old Tullie House which has 17th century features and houses a superb collection of Pre-Raphaelite artwork, as well as some English porcelain. There's also the Guildhall in the centre of Carlisle which is the official home of the Trade Guilds, and has been for 500 years, and has the proud title of being one of the oldest buildings in the city.
Stitches in Time: Quilts since 1790, 18 September, 7 November. Here's your chance to see the full collection of quilts held at Tullie House, with twenty-six wholecloth and patchwork examples dating from 1790 to the early twentieth century.
