St Bees Tourist Information

One of the more quiet locations in the Lake District, St Bees Cumbria is a haven for those seeking a break from the crowds that flock to other areas of Cumbria. It is perhaps best known for the famous 'St Bees Man', a remarkably well-preserved body found in an archaeological dig in 1981 believed to be that of a 14th Century knight. The body was found in a lead coffin and astounded scientists who are still unsure how the remains have stayed in such excellent condition. There is an exhibition dedicated to the St Bees Man as part of the Priory Church history displays.

St Bees Head is the most westerly point of Northern England and on its coast stands St Bees lighthouse which is used as a marker to let the participants in the London to Isle of Man air races know where to turn. A beautiful coastal area, St Bees also features an impressive cliff seabird colony where a variety of species can be found nesting in the cliff side, making the region a haven for birdwatchers.

The Wainwright Coast to Coast Walk from St Bees to Robin Hood's Bay

When revered walker and author Alfred Wainwright devised his coast to coast walk, little did he know just how popular it would become. The high priest of ramblers conjured up the route over the course of 14 years, completing his legacy in 1966. Today thousands of visitors to the area complete the Wainwright coast to coast each year, from St Bees to Robin Hood's bay (or vice-versa!).

The 192 mile stretch is understandably difficult to complete in one go, so there are plenty of St Bees hotels and Robin Hood's Bay guest houses welcoming short-stay visits, with plenty of Cumbria accommodation along the route. For many attempting the coast to coast St Bees is the ideal starting point thanks to the various other attractions including the beautiful beach and the nearby Owl Sanctuary.
