Ulverston Cumbria Tourist Information Laurel & Hardy

Way back before the birth of Mr Laurel, Ulverston officially became a market town in 1280. Every September they have a Charter Festival to celebrate this title. George Fox, famous founder of the Quaker movement lived here for a time.

The Ulverston Canal is the shortest, and deepest canal in the country. Constructed in 1796, this canal really did begin a process of development for Ulverston where ships would take copper, slate and linen goods outwards.

Ulverston and It's Canal Winds!

Ulverston, oh Ulverston I still hear your canal winds blowin', shouts the award winning Town Crier as he pole vaults over the Sir John Barrow monument.

Anyway, Ulverston isn't famous for Glen Campbell, rather it's proud owner of the title 'birthplace of Stan Laurel', better known locally as Arthur Stanley Jefferson. Due homage is paid with the Laurel & Hardy Museum in the centre.

Laurel and Hardy Museum, Ulverston

Lets start with Stan Laurel, alias Arthur Jefferson, as he was born here in Ulverston on 16th June 1890. He died in 1965. His background was most definitely British music hall. His father was a British showman. Stan came over to the US with the Fred Karno musical-comedy troupe in 1910. Charlie Chaplin was in this troupe as well!

Oliver Hardy, alias Norvell Hardy was born on 18 January 1892 in Harlem, Georgia and he died in 1957. Oliver Hardy was expected to move into a military career, but he didn't fancy that and instead opened a movie theatre in Milledgeville, Georgia. He worked as an actor in Jacksonville, Florida, location of the Lubin film company and later moved to Hollywood.

By the mid 1920s he was already pretty established and was working as an all-purpose comic at the Hal Roach studio. The name of Hal Roach is synonymous with Laurel and Hardy, and Roach began working with them as a comedy pair in 1926. Together they easily rode the transition from silent cinema to talkies, and won an Oscar for the 1932 film 'The Music Box'.
