Fishing Around Ulverston and Fishing Gear
Ulverston has two excellent spots for Coarse fishing, Ulverston Canal and Sandhall Ponds. Superb Tench, Pike and Carp fishing are to be had here in Ulverston on it's very own canal and at Sandhall Ponds. Check out manmade Knottallow Tarn also for excellent Brown Trout fly fishing.
Beautiful Ulverston Canal, although small at 1.25 miles and 20 metres wide (as canals go anyway), it's fish rich! Pegs are approximately 6 feet deep in the middle. This water has had fantastic fishing management, for example it's been split into two by a net positioned about halfway down the length next to Glaxo Railway Bridge. This net helps with the stoking and fishery management programme.
Pegs have been positioned at the sea end, so if you're booking a match these are recommended! Fish wise what's on offer? Well, there's a mix. Quality tench between 3-6lb are to be found particularly early in the year. There's bream, which come to the surface in summer run to 5-6lbs.
More Ulverston Fishing!
For those fishing trips to a tranquil idyllic water, choose Sandhall Ponds just near Ulverston. There's three ponds in all, which are all interlinked and contain mostly Carp and some Tench. The Carp apparently were introduced from Gas Termini ponds in Barrow, and have thrived here at Sandhall.
There's a new bridge which was built for anglers with disabilities in mind and two pegs are also planned to improve access for those with disabilities. All paths and pegs are in extremely good order. Fly fishing couldn't be better than at Knottallow Tarn, which was manmade over 150 years ago and covers about 6 acres.
This tarn is split into two about 100 metres upstream of the dam by an old causeway which may well have been the original dam! Being rather an old manmade tarn it could really be described as a natural water. It's quite shallow, only about 2 metres deep, but it's ripe for fish and has a floating line throughout the season.
