Workington Tourist Information

Lying at the mouth of the River Derwent, Workington bears the scars of its industrial past but is very much a modern Cheshire town. With several annual cultural festivals including the Paint the Town Red festival, there is plenty to do in this lively Cumbrian town. Workington music festivals are available all-year round with famous names from the world of music regularly dropping into the town to play at various Workington events.

Dunmail Park cinema is one of the town's major attractions, along with the Helena Thompson Museum which was named after its founder, a local philanthropist who donated her Georgian house to the town as a meeting place for local women. Intriguingly, one of the town's sporting traditions is the game of 'uppies and downies', a modified version of football which is still played in the town today.

Workington Festivals

Workington music festivals and other cultural events dominate the town's social calendar. Workington festival Paint the Town Red encompasses live music and comedy, along with a funfair and other attractions.

Workington welcomes anyone adopting the red dress code for the day to the event. Workington events vary from year to year; in September 2009 for example the local cricket ground played host to rock festival Valentine Rock to raise money for local charities and sports teams. The event was a success, prompting calls for more of its kind. Details of Workington festivals are available online.

Dunmail Park and Cinema

The Plaza Cinema Dunmail Park is Workington's main cinema, with 6 screens showing the latest big releases. Every Wednesday the Plaza Cinema Workington also shows alternative films including independent and foreign language productions. Dunmail Park Workington is one of Cumbria's best shopping centres and as well as the Plaza Cinema, Dunmail Park also houses several restaurants and is even home to a used car sales outlet in the shape of Edgars Dunmail Park.

Helena Thompson Museum in Workington

Helena Thompson was the last owner of Park End, traditionally the home of the steward to the wealthy Curwen family. When the home became Helena's, she wrote into her will that the stunning Georgian house be passed into the ownership of the town and used as a meeting place for women.

The Helena Thompson Museum Workington showcases many exhibits of historical interest such as Victorian and Georgian costume and decoration, and is itself a living example of the skilful architecture which shaped much of the Britain of old.
