Penrith UK

Penrith has become a renowned destination in the Lake District. It's still a bustling market town. If specialist shops are your bag, where have you been. This is one of the specialist shopping resorts in the UK. Fine foods, unique clothing, and of course ample real ale pubs and exquisite restaurants are on the menu. If you're looking for something unusual you'll find it in Penrith.

As far as locations in Cumbria goes, Penrith is ideal. It's close to beautiful Ullswater which has it's own cruiser steamers so why not take a leisurely trip, you can take your dog on the steamer too!!

Ullswater is renowned for it's sublime beauty, combined with a good combination of outdoor activities, but without the crowds of Windermere! Call in at the Rheged experience first, just off the M6 for all your tourist information on the area, plus a superb Imax large screen showing a selection of films including one which focus on the long and rich history of this part of the Lake District.

Ullswater - England's Most Beautiful Lake

Ullswater has the reputation of being known as 'England's most beautiful lake'. Once seen, you wouldn't argue with that. Perhaps it's the views of striking fells like Sheffield Pike jutting up beyond Ullswater that enhance it's beauty, the Lakeland Fells frame Ullswater it if you like, or Glenridding Dodd at the Southern tip makes for dramatic scenery.

It is less crowded than Windermere, more friendly, but facilities are numerous including camping and caravan site space right alongside the lake, water sports like windsurfing, and you can take a trip on the Ullswater Steamer from various pier points, including Glenridding Pier and Pooley Bridge Pier.

Cockermouth and William Wordsworth

The fact that William Wordsworth was born here in Cockermouth, and that his childhood home is here and open to the public, makes Cockermouth a real pilgrimage for Wordsworth fans. Wordsworth House was renovated in 2004 and reopened to the public. As there are occasional floods in the Lake District, check the Wordsworth House website for up-to-date opening times.

There are so many other things to do and see in Cockermouth, making it the perfect family location, and so close to Bassenthwaite Lake. Check out the fantastic Toy Museum for one of the best collections of archive toys dating from c.1900 on display in the UK.

If you are a lover of beer and fascinated by the beer making process, pop into the Jennings Brewery for a tour, and stock up on the delicious malty tasting Jennings bitter from their on-site shop. Cockermouth really is a gem of a town with ample galleries, river walks and historic Cockermouth Castle. Lots of pubs, specialist shopping and restaurants as well.
