Arguably the village's most famous inhabitant was Mary Robinson, whose beauty was such that her marriage made the London papers thanks to Samuel Taylor Coleridge who was writing for one such publication at the time. Mary lived at the Fish Hotel, which remains one of the oldest pubs in the Lake District, where the full story of 'the Maid of Buttermere' are recounted to this day.

Lake Buttermere Beauty
Lake Buttermere is an area of amazing natural beauty, with the lake sat in the heart of the valley between the glorious Haystacks and Red Pike mountains. The area is popular with walkers who face a choice between the footpath that surrounds the lake and the picturesque - if slightly more challenging! - routes to the summit of the mountains.
Overlooking Buttermere is High Stile Fell, one of the most impressive mountains in the lake district. Standing over 807 metres high, it attracts thousands of walkers every year as part of 'the Buttermere three' as well as being part of variation one of the coast to coast walk.
St James Church, Buttermere, Lake District Church Walk
St. James' Church is popular with those interested in Buttermere and Cumbria walks in general due to its connections with Alfred Wainwright, the famous walker who also write many guidebooks. Wainwright's ashes are scattered on Haystacks hill in accordance with his will.
The church itself, which dates back to 1507, is situated just outside Buttermere village and looks out onto Haystacks.
