Popular Derwentwater in a quiet moment!Derwentwater is located on the southern edge of Keswick and offers plenty of relaxed walking from the ample car parking provided. There are plenty of boating opportunities including rowing boats for hire.
Derwentwater is a popular Lakeland lake 4.8km long and 1.6km wide at the widest point. It is one of two lakes (the other being Bassenthwaite Lake) which is home to one of the rarest fish in Britain, the vendace. All of the bordering wetlands are most important areas for breeding birds like sandpipers and snipes.
Spot the Red squirrels in surrounding woodlands also. The whole area is designated a site of Special Scientific Interest, only awarded to very special wildlife sites.
Users of Derwentwater for leisure should be aware of the 10mph speed limited for power boats and anglers will need a permit from Keswick angling Association. Pick up a Lake User's guide from Keswick Tourist Information point for all your questions answered on safety on the lake.
Keswick Launch is the key company operating boat tours and stop-offs around Derwentwater. They have been going for quite a few years and their website is most useful prior to your visit for getting your bearings on Derwentwater. Boats run anti-clockwise and clockwise around the lake regularly throughout the day.
Check out the website for a timetable, which is different for summer and winter. Why not combine a boat trip on the lake to a drop off point where you can then begin a walk, for example linking up to Catbells from the Hawse End drop-off point.
There are a number of suggested walks from drop off points from the Lake which are clear and concise. Alternatively it's well worth just hoping aboard for 50 minutes to experience the full tour of the Lake and take in the surrounding breathtaking views of peaks like Skiddaw.
