Borrowdale Accommodation
Borrowdale Tourist Information
Borrowdale, Cumbria is a typical Lake District village, a picturesque rural community with areas of natural beauty, popular with walkers, photographers and artists. Borrowdale fell runners can head for the annual summer fell race, while other Borrowdale attractions include Scafell Pike, the highest fell in England. Tourists are well-catered for by an array of hotels, apartments and guest houses in and around the Borrowdale valley. The pencil industry originated in nearby Keswick thanks to Borrowdale's plentiful supply of high-quality graphite which was discovered some time in the 16th Century, which was also discovered to be a useful material for marking sheep. Walks in Borrowdale are pleasing to the eye but not necessarily on the lungs thanks to the hilly terrain, but seasoned walkers arrive in great numbers every year to marvel at the view atop the imposing Castle Crag, amongst others.

Fell walking in Borrowdale is thirsty work, a fact that makes pubs in Borrowdale a popular attraction during the summer months and has allowed some charming, traditional inns to thrive. The area is characterised by rocky land formations such as the forbiddingly-named Jaws of Borrowfield, a narrow gap through which the River Derwent winds to join Derwent Water.

Borrowdale Attractions
Castle Crag is located right in the centre of Borrowdale and despite being a relatively small peak, stands like a giant amongst the trees that surround its base. The terrain can be rough and challenging, but from the peak the views are awe-inspiring making the Castle Crag walk a worthwhile hike.
Another natural Borrowdale attraction is the Bowder Stone, a 2,000 tonne stone somehow balanced at what seems a precarious angle having been carried from Scotland by glacier movement. The rock was eventually dumped somewhat unceremoniously in the middle of the Lake District - contrary to popular belief that it must have fallen from one of the surrounding mountains.
Visitors can climb the stone via the ladder constructed at its side, or set off on one of the popular Lake District walks, the Bowder Stone to Dale Head walk.
