Local Lake District Produce inside Rheged
The Foyer in Rheged near PenrithThe Rheged Experience, located most conveniently just off the M6, Junction 40 really is the first port of call not just for an insight into the history of this Northern Lake District landscape, but also for a journey into Lake District history itself stretching way back to the Ancient Kingdom of Cumbria in the Dark Ages, we're talking around 590AD here. It's this period in English History from which Rheged derives it's name.
The Kingdom of Rheged ranged from Southern Scotland down the Midlands from coast to coast. Rheged was the name of the Ancient Kingdom of Cumbria in the Dark Ages.
At its peak around 590AD, the Kingdom of Rheged stretched from Southern Scotland to the Midlands and from coast to coast. The Rheged kingdom had a particularly famous king called Urien which means city born. Urien was also known as the Raven King because of his talisman or good luck charm which depicted the symbol of a Raven.
This exhibition has adopted this logo for it's own, and the stone on which the Rheged Raven is often shown depicts the shape of Cumbria today. Move on to exhibitions such as the Helly Hansen Everest 'Top of the World' Exhibition. Other attractions include a chocolate factory, outdoor mountain wear, galleries and a paper mill shop.
There's some superb activities for kids here, including an Children's Indoor Soft Play area (wish they'd do these for adults too!!). There are competitions, children's parties facility and various children's events throughout the year, tops for kids Rheged!

In December 1914, Shackleton set out with his 27-man crew, who apparently had largely responded to the following advert: Men wanted for hazardous journey. Small wages. Bitter cold. Long months of complete darkness. Constant danger. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in case of success. Ernest Shackleton. They didn't cross the Antarctic, but Shackleton managed to lead all 27 men to safety.
