Ullswater Lake District Englands Most Beautiful Lake

Ullswater has the reputation of being known as 'England's most beautiful lake'. Once seen, you wouldn't argue with that. Perhaps it's the views of striking fells like Sheffield Pike jutting up beyond Ullswater that enhance it's beauty, the Lakeland Fells frame Ullswater it if you like, or Glenridding Dodd at the Southern tip makes for dramatic scenery. Great panoramic views of Ullswater are assured at the peaks of these. Or to note Stybarrow Dodd which drops in 'stages to the shore of Ullswater'. (see Wainwright, book 1, Sheffield Pike). Walking the surrounding fells is only part of the appeal of Ullswater. It is less crowded than Windermere, more friendly, but facilities are numerous including camping and caravan site space right alongside the lake, watersports like windsurfing, and you can take a trip on the Ullswater Steamer from various pier points, including Glenridding Pier and Pooley Bridge Pier.

You can go basic or luxury around Ullswater, with a choice of accommodation types from camping to luxury hotels. There's a selection of traditional country pubs, cafes and for luxury restaurants with gourmet dining. Ullswater is ever so close to Penrith as well, so you can get the best of outdoor lake activities and bustling market town base.

Ullswater Steamers and Ullswater Water Sports

Ullswater Steamers keep steaming all year round, and take you on an 8 mile cruise of this beautiful lake. They cater for the very popular Howtown Glenridding walk, putting on extra sailings for this. On board you'll find heated saloon bars offering refreshments and light snacks and there are toilet facilities.

You can take Rover on board as well, plus special family tickets can be purchased. There's good disabled access also, and cycles are allowed on, -bonus!
