But there is more. Kendal itself was once a centre for the woollen industry and it's character and shape is marked by this. Plenty of cobbled yards! The 13th century ruins of Kendal Castle looms over the town, renowned as once home to the Parr Family and birthplace of Katerine Parr, sixth wife of Henry VIII.
Kendal is market town territory and comes alive with outdoor markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays particularly! Fantastic local fresh produce always on offer. Crammed with speciality shopping, tea rooms, pubs and restaurants and boosted by an array of festivals all year round on film, agriculture, and it's famous Medieval market every May.
Kirkby Lonsdale
Kirkby Lonsdale, Cumbria, in the Lune Valley is an excellent base for both the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales.
This area has inspired artists such as Constable and Turner, and offers ancient Norman Churches, was mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086 and is full of numerous 17th and 18th century buildings. The scenic beauty of the River Lune is worth a visit in it's own right!
Sedbergh
Sedbergh has it's own National Park Centre which offers extensive information on the geology, natural and industrial history of the area. Most famous of course for being adjacent to the spectacular Howgill Fells.
